RUNNING a shop can be time-consuming but that doesn’t mean cleaning should slip down the order of priorities.

Keeping stock well-maintained, displaying goods properly and making sure that customers continue to flock through the doors is no mean feat. 1. Clean as you go

When footfall is high, it can be difficult to maintain high standards of cleanliness. However, it’s a good idea to take advantage of any ‘down time’ to wipe a dusty surface or tidy away any rubbish.

If you have a large shop, it might be wise to assign a member of staff to be on permanent spot cleaning duty in a particular area so that they can clean up any mess as soon as the customer leaves.

2. Presentation counts

Wipe down shop counters regularly. If you use your till area for additional display purposes, make sure any promotional materials are neatly presented and not left in an untidy pile. After all, your customer still has to part with their cash (ideally, you’d also like them to make a return visit) so don’t give them an excuse to walk out of the door!

3. Eyes down

Research shows that customers’ eyes are drawn to the floor so don’t forget to pick up any litter and think about investing in some heavy-duty mats to collect dirt (without creating a tripping hazard).
Mopping and vacuuming should be left until after the shop has closed, though. As a shopper, there’s nothing worse than feeling you’re in the way of staff getting ready to go home.

4. Audit regularly

It’s important to constantly review your cleaning procedures, take a step back and think from the perspective of a customer. When you’re swept up with the busy day-to-day running of your business, it’s easy to let cleaning matters slide. Have you got time to make your shop look as inviting and well cared for as you’d like it to be? Are there better protocols you could put in place to ensure high standards are maintained? Could you improve the cleaning products you use?
