Cleaning protocols remain essential despite the Covid-19 Vaccine rollout. Reducing the risk of Coronavirus is your workplace is vital, and as an employer it is your responsibility to ensure the safety of your staff and customers.
Coronavirus cases are rising again, driven by a new variant of the virus thought to be more transmissible than other strains. One in 60 people in Wales are now estimated to have coronavirus, the highest figure since the start of the pandemic.
In attempt to flatten the curve, The Welsh government introduced a national lockdown from December 20th, 2020. Regulations call for non-essential businesses to close, people to stay at home and schools to remain closed until at least January 18th.
The government has also started to administer Covid-19 vaccines to members of the public in order of priority. Groups at highest risk include elderly residents in care homes and their carers; people aged 80 and over; frontline health and social care workers. Following this, priority is determined by age and condition of health. At present, the majority of the UK workforce have not been vaccinated against Covid-19.
As well as this, not everyone can be vaccinated. Pregnant women or people who suffer severe anaphylactic reactions to vaccine ingredients are told not to get it. These people will remain vulnerable, so we have a responsibility to protect them through other means.
We are not likely to see national effects of the vaccines for many months, so it is vital to keep protective measures in place. Individually, we should keep contacts with others to a minimum; keep a 2-metre distance from others; wash our hands regularly; wear a face covering where required and avoid touching surfaces that others have touched. Workplaces should have a risk assessment, social distancing policies and a regular cleaning schedule; promote hand-hygiene; accommodate for vulnerable workers; and provide work-from-home options wherever possible.
